Here is how I labeled my books - I used highlighter tape! I highlighted the name of the lesson and wrote the CCSS standard right on the tape. That way, if I changed my mind about a standard, I can change it if I need to. Also, this way I'm not defacing school property :)
Another way I make HM work for me is by having an instructional aide use the Phonics Library lessons. I copied the lessons from my Teacher's Manual at 85% on the copy machine. I then bound them into a book with a cover page and a weekly plan.
Lucky for you, I made a set for the 1st grade (my low group) and 2nd grade (my just-below benchmark group). I like these lessons for an aide because:
- They require no copying.
- The kids are engaged in real reading, even if it is controlled text.
- The plans are straight-forward and easy for an aide or a sub to follow.
Here are booklet covers (I copy them on colored cardstock) and also weekly plans for you to download. I made a 5-day and 4-day plan. Last year I used the 5-day, but because of early release, this year I have to use the 4-day plan.

Are you able to make a basal series work for you? Maybe you also have this series - do you have any tips for me?
Nicole, we have done something similar with our series. We have Scott Foresman 2008. We have gone through our series and added all the things it lacks. We have put together a phonics supplement and writing components to go along with it weekly. It looks like you've worked really hard! It looks great! Have a great (and calm) week and a half! :)

We use HM along with Common Core in our 2nd grade classroom too. We usually to the story of the week for reading and comprehension quizzes and then pick an choose some of the practice sheets to add to our common core sheets. So for your covers, do you just copy all the practice pages for the story of the week and then staple it as a packet for early finishers? Your covers are really cute!
