Since I've been working in an Arts-Integrated school, my teaching has really transformed. I don't do nearly the same amount of crafts as I used to, students create their own graphic organizers and Thinking Maps in composition books, and my reading instruction doesn't include the same amount of comprehension worksheets as it used to. With today's education focusing on brain research and appropriate development, it seemed like a good time to crack this book open and dive on in. <br /><br />Marcia Tate (as seen in this <a href="https://youtu.be/CedEizNg9mc" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">YouTube Video</a>) starts the book off with two scenarios:<br /><br /><ol><li>Mrs. Taylor, a civics teacher, who gives lectures day in and day out. Sometimes her lectures go on for the whole class! She doesn't use visuals and expects students to take notes on what she says. She has them round-robin read (which we know is a huge no-no for a whole group setting). Not surprising - few of them are listening or engaged. </li><li>Mr. Stewart is a civics teacher next door, but he has different techniques for his classroom. He uses graphic organizers, checks for understanding with questioning techniques, and even gets students involved in a simulation activity to learn the branches of the government. He has few behavior problems and his students excitedly learn the content. </li></ol><div>As 21st Century teachers, we know that they ways we were taught in school just don't work anymore. They weren't engaging then and they aren't engaging now. We want ALL of our students to succeed, not just the ones who are intrinsically motivated. Tate has come up with 20 strategies to ensure that students are learning and having fun at the same time:</div><div><ol><li>brainstorming and discussion</li><li>drawing and artwork (Yay for arts-integration!)</li><li>field trips</li><li>games</li><li>graphic organizers, maps, and webs</li><li>humor</li><li>manipulatives, experiments, labs, and models</li><li>metaphors, analogies, and similies</li><li>mnemonic devices</li><li>movement (more arts-integration!)</li><li>music, rhythm, rhyme, and rap (even more arts-integration!)</li><li>project-based and problem-based learning</li><li>reciprocal teaching and cooperative learning</li><li>role plays, drama, pantomimes, and charades (arts-integration again!)</li><li>storytelling</li><li>technology</li><li>visualization and guided imagery (ahem, arts-integration)</li><li>visuals</li><li>work-study and apprenticeships</li><li>writing</li></ol><div>As you can see, there are quite a lot of connections between Tate's 20 strategies and arts-integration. There are also a lot of connections with visual learning, which is helpful for struggling learners and multi-language learners. We know that long gone is the Sage on the Stage, that we need to be the Guide on the Side. If you are interested in expanding your repertoire or even validating some practices you already do, I suggest checking out this book. I was not compensated for providing this review, I just love reading teacher books and sharing them with you. </div></div><br /><br />Which strategy are you excited to learn more about or try? Which is one that you already do?<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yTEnaQYr7sU/Vm2PwFJL8tI/AAAAAAAAoLU/yi-cswuoNTg/s1600/Signature.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yTEnaQYr7sU/Vm2PwFJL8tI/AAAAAAAAoLU/yi-cswuoNTg/s1600/Signature.png" /></a></div><br />Nicole Heinleinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13944858081498794186noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4073766589747616588.post-50222033924366185092018-04-05T19:54:00.000-10:002018-04-05T19:54:10.313-10:00Place Value With Legos<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NSmV8xgLkF0/Wsb2ie3JU_I/AAAAAAAAMWQ/m6DASCcMac0XcWL3W5QBVCy8MxyVzHlJgCLcBGAs/s1600/Lego%2BBricks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="820" data-original-width="820" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NSmV8xgLkF0/Wsb2ie3JU_I/AAAAAAAAMWQ/m6DASCcMac0XcWL3W5QBVCy8MxyVzHlJgCLcBGAs/s400/Lego%2BBricks.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: inherit;">I recently had a <a href="https://www.donorschoose.org/nicoleheinlein?cachebust=1522723065943&utm_source=dc&utm_medium=page&utm_campaign=teacher_profile&utm_term=teacher_160129&rf=page-dc-2018-04-teacher_profile-teacher_160129&challengeid=48046&projects=true" target="_blank">DonorsChoose.org</a> project funded that I'm really excited about - Legos to teach place value! I got the idea from my friend Jen who blogged about it over on Hawaii's <a href="https://www.hstahype.org/blog/learning-with-legos" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">HSTA HYPE blog</a>. Basically, instead of using base ten blocks for place value, you use Legos. Here's why Legos are better:</span><br /><ul><li>Many students have Legos at home and can use them while doing homework</li><li>Students have background knowledge of Legos and already love using them</li><li>Legos create a novelty and bring some fun into your math class</li></ul><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>I was intrigued by the idea, so I wrote up a project. Here is what I requested - there are some affiliate links that help me continue to run this blog :)<br />From Amazon:</span><br /><ul><li><a href="https://amzn.to/2GqpXqu" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Akro-Mils 24 Drawer Hardware and Craft Cabinet</span></a></li></ul><ul><li><span style="font-family: inherit;">2 sets of <a href="https://amzn.to/2GvPkmN" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Drawer Separators </a></span></li></ul><ul><li><span style="font-family: inherit;">2 sets of <a href="https://amzn.to/2H7ATGw" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Multi-colored 10"x10" Base Plates</a></span></li></ul><ul><li><a href="https://amzn.to/2H4rTC6" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Brick Separators</span></a></li></ul><ul><li><a href="https://amzn.to/2q0UW1i" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: inherit;">1000 1x1 Lego-Compatible Bricks</span></a></li></ul><br /><span style="font-family: inherit;">Did you know that The Lego Store is now an approved vendor for DonorsChoose? So excited about that! Unfortunately, I had to write a special request because it was a few months ago. </span><br /><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: inherit;">I went into the <a href="https://shop.lego.com/en-US/Pick-a-Brick" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Pick-a-Brick</a> section of their website and ordered 240 white 2x10 plates (part # 383201) and 200 gray 1x10 bricks (part # 4211521). Using five 2x10 plates lined up on top and 3 spread out on the bottom to secure together, I was able to create 10x10 pieces to use as the hundreds pieces. I got this great idea from Jen, too. </span><br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LIKTmqN28-w/Wsb4NywTm2I/AAAAAAAAMWc/jSA385lIPeI4IQqDpuiU2b7_ACwllDhDwCLcBGAs/s1600/Legos%2B8.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1137" data-original-width="845" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LIKTmqN28-w/Wsb4NywTm2I/AAAAAAAAMWc/jSA385lIPeI4IQqDpuiU2b7_ACwllDhDwCLcBGAs/s400/Legos%2B8.png" width="296" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SrX8Gr_3QA4/Wsb4N606zzI/AAAAAAAAMWg/KGT34OJzfFkGWLN-DQ-3E7bWezAqJF2cwCLcBGAs/s1600/Legos%2B7.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1137" data-original-width="845" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SrX8Gr_3QA4/Wsb4N606zzI/AAAAAAAAMWg/KGT34OJzfFkGWLN-DQ-3E7bWezAqJF2cwCLcBGAs/s400/Legos%2B7.png" width="296" /></a></div><br /> <span style="font-family: inherit;">In our math curriculum, we are currently working on standard 1.NBT.C.4: <span style="color: #202020;">Add within 100, including adding a two-digit number and a one-digit number, and adding a two-digit number and a multiple of 10. Understand that in adding two-digit numbers, one adds tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose a ten.</span></span><br /><span style="color: #202020;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span><span style="color: #202020;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">It's a long standard and it's a hard one for kids who are still very literal. We've been counting the days in school using base ten blocks every day, but they still don't understand that 7 tens and 4 ones is the same as 6 tens and 14 ones. Using Legos is absolutely helping. Here are some photos from class as we were adding two 2-digit numbers and regrouping.</span></span><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_TqSxuZD6PI/WsZW9pCExfI/AAAAAAAAMVM/pdJ094otXL8XC6c_2idIyzLh2UuR7wV2wCLcBGAs/s1600/Legos%2B1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1137" data-original-width="1500" height="483" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_TqSxuZD6PI/WsZW9pCExfI/AAAAAAAAMVM/pdJ094otXL8XC6c_2idIyzLh2UuR7wV2wCLcBGAs/s640/Legos%2B1.png" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ln8as3C6W84/WsZW9at7TcI/AAAAAAAAMVI/QxqOqS1xims7YwnuKcpDfznFOQ93wdAUwCLcBGAs/s1600/Legos%2B2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1137" data-original-width="1500" height="484" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ln8as3C6W84/WsZW9at7TcI/AAAAAAAAMVI/QxqOqS1xims7YwnuKcpDfznFOQ93wdAUwCLcBGAs/s640/Legos%2B2.png" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-30QzaHffMTY/WsZW9WtMmWI/AAAAAAAAMVE/7OWhDKTRLzAgA02qtG64A7nG7oypo6oaACLcBGAs/s1600/Legos%2B3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1137" data-original-width="1500" height="484" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-30QzaHffMTY/WsZW9WtMmWI/AAAAAAAAMVE/7OWhDKTRLzAgA02qtG64A7nG7oypo6oaACLcBGAs/s640/Legos%2B3.png" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BnQUfioTmKA/WsZW_Y0JFrI/AAAAAAAAMVQ/TDCu61aSgEkGoj4pchSx5hQpewbkzWrhgCLcBGAs/s1600/Legos%2B4.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1137" data-original-width="845" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BnQUfioTmKA/WsZW_Y0JFrI/AAAAAAAAMVQ/TDCu61aSgEkGoj4pchSx5hQpewbkzWrhgCLcBGAs/s640/Legos%2B4.png" width="474" /></a></div><br /> <span style="color: #202020;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">You might be wondering about storage and management. I got the drawer organizer so the kids have easy access to the materials and can grab them when they need them. We have to practice with them whole group so they will know how to use them independently. I have 16 sets of tens and ones, but 20 students. So some of the students share. We call that "making a strong choice to share" and I praise the ones who choose to share so that others can have their own. We like making strong choices in my room and doing something that's best for everyone even if you don't want to :) </span></span><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VfYLbC5yKWs/WscBnhusnHI/AAAAAAAAMW4/A3DAqxObLmwOR1P6SiVTy04FOw1V2GXFwCLcBGAs/s1600/Legos%2B11.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1137" data-original-width="1129" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VfYLbC5yKWs/WscBnhusnHI/AAAAAAAAMW4/A3DAqxObLmwOR1P6SiVTy04FOw1V2GXFwCLcBGAs/s400/Legos%2B11.png" width="396" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q22_wYorCGw/WscB86_al0I/AAAAAAAAMXE/-UchUkxNdjwgVzfifgLTgFiQaGRpkyOcACLcBGAs/s1600/Legos%2B9.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1137" data-original-width="845" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q22_wYorCGw/WscB86_al0I/AAAAAAAAMXE/-UchUkxNdjwgVzfifgLTgFiQaGRpkyOcACLcBGAs/s400/Legos%2B9.png" width="296" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6nXV6mzvnRg/WscB8sjArBI/AAAAAAAAMW8/9f8gpi6r1y8TDYl-CCME9LDKLIkJkJgPQCLcBGAs/s1600/Legos%2B10.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1137" data-original-width="845" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6nXV6mzvnRg/WscB8sjArBI/AAAAAAAAMW8/9f8gpi6r1y8TDYl-CCME9LDKLIkJkJgPQCLcBGAs/s400/Legos%2B10.png" width="296" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jpVYd5OxtPM/WscB86qoSjI/AAAAAAAAMXA/5vW4hq67VFMh9eeVPhNRCcVZ6VKYbnV7wCLcBGAs/s1600/Legos%2B6.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1137" data-original-width="845" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jpVYd5OxtPM/WscB86qoSjI/AAAAAAAAMXA/5vW4hq67VFMh9eeVPhNRCcVZ6VKYbnV7wCLcBGAs/s400/Legos%2B6.png" width="296" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I put the brick separators in a little container on the top. In Part Two, we will dive into Visual Text. We will answer the following questions:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><ol><li>What is visual literacy?</li><li>How do we observe and describe visual text?</li><li>How do we make sense of and connect to visual text?</li></ol><h2>What is Visual Literacy? </h2><div>When Common Core came into practice, visual literacy was a term many teachers were not familiar with. Yet, it cropped up in many standards. For example: </div><div><ul><li><span style="color: #444444; font-family: inherit;"><a href="http://www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy/CCRA/R/7/" style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; box-sizing: border-box; text-decoration-line: none;">CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.R.7</a><span style="background-color: white;">: Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse media and formats, including visually and quantitatively, as well as in words.</span></span></li><li><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #444444; font-family: inherit;"><a class="identifier" href="http://www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy/CCRA/SL/2/" name="CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.SL.2" style="background: transparent; box-sizing: border-box; text-decoration-line: none; text-transform: uppercase;">CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.SL.2</a>: Integrate and evaluate information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally.</span></span></li></ul><div><span style="color: black;"><a href="https://www.edutopia.org/blog/ccia-10-visual-literacy-strategies-todd-finley" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Edutopia</a> blogger and assistant editor Todd Findley defines visual literacy in simple terms: It's how we teach kids to think about and think through pictures.</span></div><div><br /></div><h2>How do we observe and describe visual text?</h2><div>A Honolulu Museum of Art docent once told me she on average witnesses museum patrons looking at a piece of art for <i>seconds</i> before moving on to the next piece. I get that - the museum is a big place. There is a lot to see. But what if our eyes were trained to look longer and closer at certain art that caught our fancy? I think we would notice more and appreciate more about the art. I saw that even with art that I didn't like at first glance, once I spent some time with it and noticed more and more, it started to grow on me and I liked it more. </div><div><br /></div><div>The key to looking at art is to actually look at it. Set a timer for 1 minute. It will seem like eternity, but keep looking. Notice the details. When you think you've seen enough, look again. Look closer. Look for <i>more</i>. Ask yourself "What else?" In the arts integration world, this process is called <b>Observe</b>. The first step to looking at art is actually looking at it and noticing all the details. </div><div><br /></div><div>The next step is to <b>Describe</b>. This is where you will verbally talk about what you see. In the first PD I took about this process in 2014, we viewed the painting <a href="https://ab976f528c498801423d-2376439231beb5d718e8f49fe25fed31.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com/uploads/media/media/12867/homa-doe-poster4-fraser-web.pdf" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">"Lei Sellers"</a>. Hearing others' descriptions helped me see things differently. The painting is a bit abstract and I did not know what was in the background. After hearing another teacher say he saw a white boat, the painting made a lot more sense to me. It was a cruise ship and the woman and girl were selling lei to the tourists who arrived by boat. My mother in law had told me a story about her first visit to Hawaii was by boat from California when she was a teenager. She told me it was a rough ride across the Pacific and it took several days. Once I knew the painting had a boat, I could start to make deeper connections and form a deeper understanding of what was going on. </div><div><br /></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yUBmorcGfdE/WpYesX1SRnI/AAAAAAAALHg/9HKh1ZFIrsEda0tkfrPtNxsTSglUCS8DwCLcBGAs/s1600/Lei%2BSellers.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1116" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yUBmorcGfdE/WpYesX1SRnI/AAAAAAAALHg/9HKh1ZFIrsEda0tkfrPtNxsTSglUCS8DwCLcBGAs/s400/Lei%2BSellers.png" width="278" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>Lei Sellers </i>by Juliette May Fraser, 1941<br />Oil on canvas, 26 x 18 in. </td></tr></tbody></table><div><br />With young children, typically we first focus on quantity, size, and color of the subjects in the painting. This helps them know what to look for and know how to describe what they see. In the case with the Lei Sellers, I could say "I see one large, white boat in the top left background. I see four people. Three are facing the front and one is facing the back." This would get us started noticing and describing.</div><h2> How do we make sense of and connect to visual text? </h2><div>The next step is to <b>Interpret</b>. This is where students make inferences. Kids are good at inferences, but we have to make sure they are grounded in evidence. In close reading, students make claims based on text evidence. In visual thinking, they make claims based on <i>visual</i> evidence. Look at the <i>Lei Sellers</i> painting again. "I think the girl is bored of waiting for the ship to come to port because she is standing with one knee popped and she is staring at her hands. When I stand like that, I'm waiting in line at the grocery store or post office. I'm really bored when I stand like that." Notice how I made an inference of how the subject of the painting is feeling based on what I see in the painting and also on my own experiences. One very important phrase you will repeat over and over while interpreting paintings is "What do you see that makes you say that?"<br /><br />The last step in the ODIC process is <b>Connect</b>. This is the part where I would share the story that my mother in law told me about going to Hawaii in a ship when she was a teenager. We could talk about how we can sometimes hear cruise ship horns when we are close to the harbor, or see them tendered off shore in Lahaina. Students might talk about their parents taking a cruise in the Caribbean or Alaska, or how they have been in a boat before. Students might make connections to selling things. Some students might sell Girl Scout cookies or fundraising items for sports teams. The connect section is a great way to create deeper understandings of art because we have experienced some part of it ourselves. <br /><br />Another C is Create and we do that with drama. That is another post entirely ;)<br /><br /><h2>Resources</h2><a href="http://honolulumuseum.org/5151-teacher_resources" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Honolulu Museum of Art Teacher Resources</a> - they will only send posters to teachers in Hawaii schools, but you can download them and print them out or project them for your students to view. <br /><br /><a href="https://vimeo.com/147533342" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Example video of ODIC</a> - see students from my school walk through the process on our morning Keiki Honu News.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.teaching-with-style.com/2015/03/honolulu-museum-of-art.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">My first visit to the museum </a>- read about my first visit to the art museum in an old post.<br /><br /><a href="http://npg.si.edu/learn/classroom-resource/reading-portraiture-guide-educators" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Reading Portraiture Guide</a> from the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery - they have other fabulous teacher resources, as well!<br /><br /><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7cxlqls03I" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">See Melanie Rick, from Focus 5 Consulting, talk about the process of reading art</a>, from Any Given Child Sarasota - they have a great IG account, too!<br /><br /><a href="http://www.artsintegrationconsulting.com/professional-development/visual-art-writing--math/reading-portraits-as-biogra.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Bring high quality arts integration professional development to your school!</a> The teaching artists at Focus 5 Consulting lead my favorite workshops to attend! In fact, it is the only arts-integrated public school in the state of Hawaii. We still teach required curriculum - Hawaii is a one-district state with mandated curriculum for math and ELA. But at our school, we use the curriculum as the content to teach the standards and use arts integration as strategies for <i>HOW</i> we teach that content. One main focus is on professional development. We need to learn from teaching artists how to teach through the arts. We need to be <i>inspired.</i> Our professional development also brings the artists into our classrooms so we can see how they work with students. And sometimes it leads to mentoring. We all know that sitting in a one-hour professional development does not make the biggest impact on our students. It's revisiting the content, talking about it with peers, seeing it in action, and then being coached on it after we've given it a try. That's the model my school employs. At each meeting, we are expected to get up out of our seats and do the work we ask our students to do everyday. We dance, we sing, we act, we draw, we write. If I can't get out of my comfort zone with my colleagues, how can I ask my students to do it with their peers? It's amazing how empowering it is.<br /><br />Many of the teaching artists who visit my school are from the <a href="http://www.kennedy-center.org/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts</a> in Washington DC. Here is how the Kennedy Center defines <span style="text-align: center;">Arts Integration:</span><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.kennedy-center.org/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jYK_r7WmK_c/VaAep-Y1BMI/AAAAAAAAmnE/Jxfz6FQm9rg/s640/Arts%2BIntegration.png" width="492" /></a></div>The part that really sticks out to me is that in order for integration to occur, you have to have evolving objectives in both the subject area and art form. Reading about the Statue of Liberty and then painting her is not integration. It's a great <i>art enhancement</i>. For it to be integration, you would need to have visual arts standards that you are focusing on, as well, not just social studies. In first grade, one of our visual arts standards is about the elements of art: line, shape, color, texture, and form. I could focus on her color (mint green) and have students mix primary colors to create her green patina. We could then do a science experiment with pennies to find how copper oxidizes. The final project might very well be a drawing or painting of the statue, but after learning about color with an art perspective and her color from a science perspective, students would have a much deeper understanding and more connection to the content.<br /><br />When creating a work of art (dance, drama, visual arts, poetry, etc), students naturally go through a creative process. This process can be entered from any stage and doesn't follow the same path each time. We all have heard it, art is messy. But that's the beauty of it. By not following the same exact process, we can surprise ourselves. And that element of surprise is what is intriguing about art.<br /><br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UOU5tTrzrUU/Wb92IDS7YrI/AAAAAAAAIVk/CaJTxOFV_IMr1b74JMPHuBCFXbDJki9aQCLcBGAs/s1600/creative%2Bprocess.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="467" data-original-width="467" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UOU5tTrzrUU/Wb92IDS7YrI/AAAAAAAAIVk/CaJTxOFV_IMr1b74JMPHuBCFXbDJki9aQCLcBGAs/s400/creative%2Bprocess.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><a href="https://artsedge.kennedy-center.org/educators/lessons" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">ARTSEDGE</a> is a wonderful collection of lessons that you can try for integration purposes. I find that ELA and social studies lend themselves to integration very easily. Those standards are a great place to start.<br /><br />Go try a lesson and let me know how it goes!<br /><br /><br />Nicole Heinleinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13944858081498794186noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4073766589747616588.post-54992009769106320632017-09-17T20:17:00.000-10:002017-11-29T16:19:08.935-10:00American SymbolsPart of the first grade standards for Hawaii state social studies is to learn about American Symbols! I also wrote a poem that I included in my freebie. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-I5slnGaMw1k/Wb9jKaKtv2I/AAAAAAAAIVU/HvxA65G2Rc8Ny4tPk-RqDH63mmJD1QnDgCLcBGAs/s1600/Lady%2BLiberty.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="912" data-original-width="844" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-I5slnGaMw1k/Wb9jKaKtv2I/AAAAAAAAIVU/HvxA65G2Rc8Ny4tPk-RqDH63mmJD1QnDgCLcBGAs/s640/Lady%2BLiberty.png" width="592" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Via <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/212443307394505109/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Pinterest</a></td></tr></tbody></table><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div>You can download my freebie with a poem, interactive journal, crafts for the world, state symbols, and the White House, as well as an assessment for free on my <a href="https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BxwXr-yc3_LxZzBLRHBjYWpvNlk" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Google Drive</a><span id="goog_1355010405"></span><a href="https://www.blogger.com/"></a><span id="goog_1355010406"></span>!<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BxwXr-yc3_LxZzBLRHBjYWpvNlk" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="932" data-original-width="720" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Vit9euSxe1k/Wb9a3uTHd6I/AAAAAAAAIVE/9GZsrARvGJUcatkoFvVzyQlpYRhSIU6lwCLcBGAs/s400/Slide01.png" width="308" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">How do you teach the US Symbols? </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yTEnaQYr7sU/Vm2PwFJL8tI/AAAAAAAAoLU/yi-cswuoNTg/s1600/Signature.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yTEnaQYr7sU/Vm2PwFJL8tI/AAAAAAAAoLU/yi-cswuoNTg/s1600/Signature.png" /></a></div><br />Nicole Heinleinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13944858081498794186noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4073766589747616588.post-57280723776912736052017-02-20T10:10:00.000-10:002017-02-20T10:18:28.627-10:00Classroom Theme and GiveawayI love decorating, both my home and my classroom. When it comes to classroom decor, I have used <a href="http://www.schoolgirlstyle.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Schoolgirl Style</a> for the past 4 years. <br /><br />It started in my <a href="http://www.teaching-with-style.com/2013/08/back-to-school-must-haves.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">2nd grade classroom</a> on the island of Lanai in 2013 when I used the <a href="http://www.schoolgirlstyle.com/2014/04/rainbow-chalkboard-classroom-theme/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Rainbow Chalkboard collection</a>. I love the bright colors and it mixed perfectly with my black fabric bulletin boards, freshly painted black bookcases, and bright colored accents. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xLYSlO-36iY/WKphUcnd4KI/AAAAAAAArPs/eMAYXKKI97wyroBZGWsSH4YNtymkSgcKACK4B/s1600/blog%2Bpicture%2B1.001.jpeg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xLYSlO-36iY/WKphUcnd4KI/AAAAAAAArPs/eMAYXKKI97wyroBZGWsSH4YNtymkSgcKACK4B/s400/blog%2Bpicture%2B1.001.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I even used some of the signs to label areas in the <a href="http://www.teaching-with-style.com/2014/04/computer-lab-spruce-up.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">computer lab</a>! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-U9ZiQ76J06Q/WKphb6ksbXI/AAAAAAAArP0/Z0e0J3NivQY7VXg2_qz2Qp5G6WNNc3fhwCK4B/s1600/computer%2Blab%2B5.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="301" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-U9ZiQ76J06Q/WKphb6ksbXI/AAAAAAAArP0/Z0e0J3NivQY7VXg2_qz2Qp5G6WNNc3fhwCK4B/s400/computer%2Blab%2B5.png" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">When we moved to Maui and I got a transfer to a school in <a href="http://www.teaching-with-style.com/2014/09/classroom-tour-2014.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Lahaina teaching first grade</a>, I wanted an under the sea Eric Carle theme to match my new ocean rug from <a href="https://www.kidcarpet.com/products/fish-in-the-sea-rug" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Kid Carpet</a>. So I combined the <a href="http://www.schoolgirlstyle.com/2014/05/bug-classroom-theme/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Bugs</a> and the <a href="http://www.schoolgirlstyle.com/2013/06/ocean-sneak-peekwell-kind-of/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Ocean</a> collections. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TAwIb6F6ctY/WKqa2QhMFgI/AAAAAAAArQU/_Iu1FR_-jV887Kqd_EwDlb6kphONLzYmACK4B/s1600/1%2Bfront%2Bwall.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TAwIb6F6ctY/WKqa2QhMFgI/AAAAAAAArQU/_Iu1FR_-jV887Kqd_EwDlb6kphONLzYmACK4B/s400/1%2Bfront%2Bwall.png" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>Then, I learned about our neighborhood school (I had been commuting 45 mins to an hour each way). It's arts-integrated, a newer building with AC, and full of passionate teachers. I needed to be a part of it! They offered me <a href="http://www.teaching-with-style.com/2015/08/storing-belongings-in-5th-grade.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">fifth grade</a> and I happily accepted the challenge. I went for the <a href="http://www.schoolgirlstyle.com/2015/04/flamingo/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Flamingo Watercolor collection</a> to create a calming, yet fun environment. I used the same curtains from my Lahaina classroom and I brought the ocean rug up to 5th grade, too. The kids liked laying on it to read because it is so soft. I also kept the same library bins, although I had to get almost all new books. I added a bunch of alternative seating options, such as pillows, a pub height table with stools, a lowered table with stools, a elastic strip chair, and a large bean bag.<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VxjiazzaA2o/WKqbrelaYGI/AAAAAAAArQg/r-xTjQW9TkkyDX2ltYhzJnxY95vvz9tfgCK4B/s1600/Storage%2B5.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VxjiazzaA2o/WKqbrelaYGI/AAAAAAAArQg/r-xTjQW9TkkyDX2ltYhzJnxY95vvz9tfgCK4B/s400/Storage%2B5.png" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GX-gO39G3SI/WKqeAFlcM9I/AAAAAAAArQs/QK6C3MEo6aAxxv0UH8VVfknNRxPV0svuwCK4B/s1600/blog%2Bpicture2.001.jpeg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GX-gO39G3SI/WKqeAFlcM9I/AAAAAAAArQs/QK6C3MEo6aAxxv0UH8VVfknNRxPV0svuwCK4B/s400/blog%2Bpicture2.001.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">Front of the room.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7XQkBcPN3-c/WKqeC9MtHQI/AAAAAAAArQ0/8w7e2VmqGfsiagb9SFXiNIWWxTxfXVoDgCK4B/s1600/blog%2Bpicture3.001.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7XQkBcPN3-c/WKqeC9MtHQI/AAAAAAAArQ0/8w7e2VmqGfsiagb9SFXiNIWWxTxfXVoDgCK4B/s400/blog%2Bpicture3.001.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Notice the READ letters on the wall from my 2nd grade classroom on Lanai and the fabric bunting on the windows from my 3rd grade classroom in Oregon!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qliuUNWFRrw/WKqexTPyG8I/AAAAAAAArRA/C-8g-RpJPPcXxLlr9ZjlV652gNNNrZVcQCK4B/s1600/blog%2Bpicture5.001.jpeg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qliuUNWFRrw/WKqexTPyG8I/AAAAAAAArRA/C-8g-RpJPPcXxLlr9ZjlV652gNNNrZVcQCK4B/s400/blog%2Bpicture5.001.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">Other corner showing the library.</div><br />I loved working with upper grades and re-learning the standards myself. I can say that I am SO much better and more confident in math than I ever have been! Thank you visual strategies! But at the end of the year when my principal needed to move an upper grade teacher to a new section of 1st grade and asked me, I jumped at the chance to be with the little ones again. My husband wasn't so happy about helping me move classrooms, yet again, but cest la vie. <br /><br />I brought back the black fabric for my bulletin boards and wanted to mesh the Rainbow Chalkboard collection with the Watercolor Flamingo form last year. The result was actually Melanie's newest collection: <a href="http://www.schoolgirlstyle.com/2016/05/melanies-classroom-reveal-introducing-color-my-classroom/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Color My Classroom</a>! If you are like me, you have tons of projects planned for the weeks you have off during the summer. My main project: Leveling books. My school uses Accelerated Reader (AR) and I wanted to label the books so kids could easily see the level. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Looking around at other blogs, I was instantly drawn to my friend Jen from <a href="http://www.teacherbythebeach.com/2014/08/book-leveling-freebie-labels.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Teacher by the Beach</a>'s library. She organizes hers by author's last name and nonfiction theme (like a real library!). She also puts a sticker on the spine for the level. Her current school doesn't use AR, so she has started to label her books with the Fountas and Pinnell system they use. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.teacherbythebeach.com/2014/08/book-leveling-freebie-labels.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="280" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-URf3-COuf2E/V3yznhuIq4I/AAAAAAAAqO8/oEDmwcgJQjcmSq9h2HfRHkqLLJvnG4lfQCLcB/s400/classroom%2Blabels%2Bbook%2Blevels5.png" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Another library I love is Molly from <a href="http://lessonswithlaughter.com/classroom-library-organization/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Lessons with Laughter</a>'s library. I LOVE her color coded system! Her chapter books are organized by author's last name, like a library or bookstore would do. By color coding the spine, students know the vicinity of the book they are looking for or where to put it back. It's just an extra scaffold. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://lessonswithlaughter.com/classroom-library-organization/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OT7MSd0Fxjc/V3yzwuOLXMI/AAAAAAAAqPA/qFansTAjDOoxChedsu2Oa6VoHHSGxCuqwCLcB/s400/Classroom%2BLibrary.png" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">So when thinking about how to level and label my books, I wanted to combine the two ideas. I created color coded spine stickers with levels in a grade-level range the same color. My books are all organized by genre and theme, so the colors wouldn't ever be together, but if a student was interested in Captain Underpants books, she could find one easily in her level range by looking at the spine sticker. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iNOO_4eeP58/V3vpS8jiIxI/AAAAAAAAqOQ/YCwgVVxHhT8YC5dxO1ubmyQupzGM1W2gQCLcB/s1600/AR%2B1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iNOO_4eeP58/V3vpS8jiIxI/AAAAAAAAqOQ/YCwgVVxHhT8YC5dxO1ubmyQupzGM1W2gQCLcB/s400/AR%2B1.png" width="300" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I printed my stickers on Avery address labels and cut them in half. They worked ok, but since they were so stretchy, only a few things could go in them. Here, I am using them in my 2nd grade class on Lanai for a couple folders. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-viFrhr5vErs/VeVaoQvP8iI/AAAAAAAAntw/5uISrTswGJE/s1600/chair%2Bpocket%2B1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-viFrhr5vErs/VeVaoQvP8iI/AAAAAAAAntw/5uISrTswGJE/s400/chair%2Bpocket%2B1.png" width="298" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-X1Q2VYxo2kU/VeVaq8Hg1fI/AAAAAAAAnuA/BFSfrV7vo1U/s1600/chair%2Bpocket%2B2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-X1Q2VYxo2kU/VeVaq8Hg1fI/AAAAAAAAnuA/BFSfrV7vo1U/s400/chair%2Bpocket%2B2.png" width="300" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Last year in 1st grade, I used the amazing <a href="http://www.seatsack.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Seat Sacks</a>. They are made out of heavy duty fabric and even have a clear sleeve for a name tag. I had the students keep their homework binder in them. </div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Tgx6qIvz5UA/VeVasQsPb0I/AAAAAAAAnuM/3kDAP-j0VAw/s1600/chair%2Bpocket%2B3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Tgx6qIvz5UA/VeVasQsPb0I/AAAAAAAAnuM/3kDAP-j0VAw/s640/chair%2Bpocket%2B3.png" width="636" /></a></div> This year in 5th grade, I'm using Seat Sacks again. This time I opted for the larger sized <a href="http://www.seatsack.com/4newproducts-1priceultimateorganizerset.aspx" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Seat Sack Plus</a> for the bigger chairs. I've officially been a 5th grade teacher for 2.5 weeks! And it's going well! Today I wanted to take some time to show you some classroom set up that is working!<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oFOn2se_Wuo/Vm3a49Wz7JI/AAAAAAAAoNM/sfIpkeH__Qo/s1600/Storage%2Bin%2B5th%2BGrade.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="235" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oFOn2se_Wuo/Vm3a49Wz7JI/AAAAAAAAoNM/sfIpkeH__Qo/s400/Storage%2Bin%2B5th%2BGrade.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>When I came in my room this summer, I had enough desks for 16 students, but I knew I would have 25. Instead of begging the custodians to find me more desks, I decided to embrace the challenge and try to go for more alternative seating this year!<br /><br />I ended up getting rid of all desks except one double that was set pretty short. I got a kitchen table for free on Craigslist, pulled a rectangle table in from the hallway, and utilized the existing round table, kidney-shaped table, and computer desks for student seating. <br /><br />Now, since my students don't have desks, where do their things go?<br /><br />Backpacks go on this <a href="http://www.lakeshorelearning.com/product/productDet.jsp?productItemID=1%2C689%2C949%2C371%2C919%2C590&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=1408474395181113&bmUID=1439613635540" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">backpack cart</a> from Lakeshore Learning. Thank you Donorschoose! We just wheel it out to the hallway during classtimes.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.lakeshorelearning.com/product/productDet.jsp?productItemID=1%2C689%2C949%2C371%2C919%2C590&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=1408474395181113&bmUID=1439613635540" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-275zclpDP00/Vc7DKOh3adI/AAAAAAAAnSQ/XgFE4K4979o/s400/backpack%2Bcart.png" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">All supplies are shared and go in these drawers on the bottom shelf. The labels are from School Girl Style's <a href="http://www.schoolgirlstyle.com/2015/04/flamingo/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Flamingo Watercolor Set</a>. I used the font <a href="https://creativemarket.com/SweetType/232859-Sweet-Peony-Handmade-Script" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Sweet Peony</a>. The middle shelf has clipboards, crayons, mini-staplers, and date stamps. The top is where I set down my curriculum books or read alouds, colored pencils organized by color, along with loose leaf paper, tape, extra scissors, pens, and index cards in the letter trays. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IAQWRQ_aG94/Vc7hJaBJZYI/AAAAAAAAnUA/stamay7ghdE/s1600/Storage%2B1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IAQWRQ_aG94/Vc7hJaBJZYI/AAAAAAAAnUA/stamay7ghdE/s640/Storage%2B1.png" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Homework gets turned in each morning to these student mailboxes. I also use it to pass back papers, tests, and notes from the office. Thank you again, Donorschoose! I've had this Quill <a href="http://www.quill.com/safco-adjustable-compartment-literature-organizers/cbs/044007.html?promoCode=200200555&Effort_Code=901&Find_Number=9424OK" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Literature Organizer</a> for 6 years and it is still going strong! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.quill.com/safco-adjustable-compartment-literature-organizers/cbs/044007.html?promoCode=200200555&Effort_Code=901&Find_Number=9424OK" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="478" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ics_wDpgjz8/Vc7hxdOCntI/AAAAAAAAnUI/3I3fiiJ46ss/s640/Storage%2B3.png" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Book boxes are really important in my room! They house independent reading books, reading journal, writing journal, and a science poetry book. They can grab their book box, get cozy, and get to work! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-N5VpDjgp0zA/Vc7iJMm7cVI/AAAAAAAAnUQ/WSSDQuAA_as/s1600/Storage%2B2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-N5VpDjgp0zA/Vc7iJMm7cVI/AAAAAAAAnUQ/WSSDQuAA_as/s640/Storage%2B2.png" width="480" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Letters on my bulletin board are from the <a href="http://www.schoolgirlstyle.com/2015/04/flamingo/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Flamingo Watercolor</a> collection. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I bought this <a href="http://www.demco.com/GOTO?PRD13587390" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">booktruck </a>from Demco a few years ago when I was drowning in text books. I love that it has double sided storage and moves. This year each group has a large magazine file to house social studies folders, reader response books, and spelling journals. On top is old leveled readers that I let the kids take home if they want. The other side is all the extra loose leaf paper, composition books and folders.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.demco.com/GOTO?PRD13587390" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WdTNnTcsqbw/Vc7iY75YqdI/AAAAAAAAnUY/1ojLS0AmDzc/s640/Storage%2B6.png" width="482" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Those labels are from the <a href="http://www.schoolgirlstyle.com/2015/04/flamingo/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Flamingo Watercolor</a> collection, too!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Homework binders and planners go in chair pockets, just like my last year's class. These are the large Seat Sack Plus from <a href="http://www.seatsack.com/newseatsackpluswithpencilpouch-large17inch.aspx" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The Original Seat Sack Company</a>. They are my FAV! Super durable!<span style="text-align: center;"> </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.seatsack.com/newseatsackpluswithpencilpouch-large17inch.aspx" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zt3BrJb8rps/Vc7iwiw4C2I/AAAAAAAAnUg/ECBu6VMszWI/s640/Chair%2BPockets%2B2.png" width="480" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">These girls are sitting at my free kitchen table! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">There are enough chairs for every child, even though they are not required to sit in them and they sit in new seats each day. The kids are grouped into 5 heterogeneous groups of 5 for our current social studies and science units. I'm doing expert groups/jigsaw activities for both units, so it's super helpful to have them in the same groups. As they come in in the morning, each group decides where they want to sit and places their team sign on the table. The <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009LQWQCO/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B009LQWQCO&linkCode=as2&tag=nicolescraft-20&linkId=TNUV3QRKQNMMETC5" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">table number holders</a> are from Amazon. I went to two different restaurant supply stores on island and they didn't have them. I tried to buy local! Lol. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-o0bDxtzrDyI/Vc7kiGdVlZI/AAAAAAAAnUs/GOoZVxRwuhE/s1600/Storage%2B5.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-o0bDxtzrDyI/Vc7kiGdVlZI/AAAAAAAAnUs/GOoZVxRwuhE/s640/Storage%2B5.png" width="638" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The signs are from, you guessed it, the <a href="http://www.schoolgirlstyle.com/2015/04/flamingo/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Flamingo Watercolor</a> collection!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">At each table is a supply caddy for supplies they need more often: pencils, erasers, glue, scissors, and crayons. Some of the caddies are from <a href="http://www.reallygoodstuff.com/three-compartment-caddies-neon/p/157197/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Really Good Stuff</a> and some are from <a href="http://schoolgirl-style.myshopify.com/collections/caddies" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">School Girl Style.</a> Melanie has some awesome colors in her shop! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YVzVeB4mGcc/Vc7mTi19X0I/AAAAAAAAnU4/u1vIn1UmbjM/s1600/Storage%2B4.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YVzVeB4mGcc/Vc7mTi19X0I/AAAAAAAAnU4/u1vIn1UmbjM/s640/Storage%2B4.png" width="638" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">So far, I'm really happy with this set up! And the kids and I can easily move tables and chairs to the side to have more space in the classroom for dance or drama. And I'm happy to not have extra things from home all over the classroom, just the necessities! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">What are your favorite storage tips? </div><br />Nicole Heinleinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13944858081498794186noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4073766589747616588.post-38932283584993404752015-07-27T21:24:00.000-10:002015-12-13T07:50:53.540-10:00Freebie Update!Earlier I shared my K-1 Hawaii HCPSIII standards freebie. I realized my kids were bombing the tests because I was focusing on comprehension, spelling pattern, sight words, and grammar. Most of those elements are represented on the test, but there are usually 3-4 questions based on the structural analysis and vocabulary. And some concepts only have one practice book page and no other lessons tied to it! </span><br /><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br />One week the structural analysis focus was final stable syllable: <span class="stateNumber">RF.1.3e </span> Decode two-syllable words following basic patterns by breaking the words into syllables. </span><br /><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: inherit;">I didn't even know what that was! We choose a standard to work on almost all year. We pre-test to set a baseline and then predict how much progress each child will make throughout the year. We teach, review, formatively assess, review some more, and then we give the final assessment. The percentage of students who met the benchmark we predicted at the beginning of the year is part of how we are evaluated as successful educators.<br /><br />My grade level chose place value, specifically Common Core standard 1.NBT.2, to focus on for our Student Learning Objective. Many of my kids were confused as to how to decompose two digit numbers and are clueless about expanded form. <br /><br />To help practice each day, I added some place value routines to our calendar time. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HWVe_mZx6ns/VYIy9bjkzNI/AAAAAAAAH8M/utInETmMtAM/s1600/calendar.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="440" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HWVe_mZx6ns/VYIy9bjkzNI/AAAAAAAAH8M/utInETmMtAM/s640/calendar.png" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Check out my <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Teaching-With-Style/Search:calendar%20set" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Calendar Sets</a> on TpT!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Here is our routine, all lead by the weekly calendar helper.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><ol><li>Sing the Days of the Week song (helper gets to choose either the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtQcnZ2JWsY" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Addams' Family tune</a> or <a href="http://www.psd1.org/cms/lib4/WA01001055/centricity/domain/34/chants/math/seven%20days%20a%20week.pdf" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">She'll be Comin' Round the Mountain</a>)</li><li>Practice saying the date as the calendar helper points to it's components. For example, on March 23rd we said "Today is Monday (helper pointed to the Monday card across the top of the calendar) March (pointed to the March month card at the top) 23rd (pointed to today's card that says 23) 2015 (points to the year card next to the month card at the top). This helps kids practice saying the date as a complete sentence and also the grammar of saying March 23rd instead of March 23. </li><li>I then change the day's number at the top (3-23-15) so they learn how we write the date. Now we've practiced how to say it in words and how to write it in numbers. That's why I have a 3 card next to the month at the top of the calendar pocket chart, to correspond with the 3 in our written date. </li><li>I then have the kids tell me how many tens and how many ones are in today's date number. I wrote this in the same format as our math curriculum, Origo's Stepping Stones. They call that little 2-box graph an "expander". Kids start by making expanders so they can see how 2 tens and 3 ones can be put together to make 23. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YXk_Va5WKWQ/VYI-JPfW3MI/AAAAAAAAH8c/BTulp5eMtJI/s1600/Expander%2B1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="193" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YXk_Va5WKWQ/VYI-JPfW3MI/AAAAAAAAH8c/BTulp5eMtJI/s640/Expander%2B1.png" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cgl1Um3E8GU/VYI-JSJUoiI/AAAAAAAAH8g/1RLyi18C2Jk/s1600/Expander%2B2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="116" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cgl1Um3E8GU/VYI-JSJUoiI/AAAAAAAAH8g/1RLyi18C2Jk/s640/Expander%2B2.png" width="640" /></a></div></li><li>Kids bring their whiteboards, markers, and erasers with them to calendar each day. Once we are done with all the calendar business, they then write number sentences that equal the day's number. So for the day I took this picture, they all equaled 23. After they have each written a few, they share out. The calendar helper calls on 2 girls and 2 boys to share and write's then on a large whiteboard for everyone to see. There needs to be 2 addition and 2 subtraction sentences. When all 4 are written on the board, the help uses a pointer to lead the class in reading all 4 number sentences together. </li><li>We then move to the Hundred's Chart and the kids practice skip counting. It's always by 5's but sometimes we start at 5 and count up and sometimes we start at 100 and count down. Counting down was SUPER hard for then at the beginning of the year. Now they are pros! </li><li>We then move to the place value chart and add a number to keep track of how many days we've been in school. They add a number card and also add a place value cube. Then there are 10 ones cubes, they trade them out for a rod. When there are 10 rods, they trade them out for a flat. </li><li>We then sing the Doubles Rap to help us memorize the doubles facts. We sing it every.single.day. They even made up their own motions to the lyrics. So stinkin' cute! <table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jskbvF76bMc/VYJCeJlLJQI/AAAAAAAAH8w/yauLhJVfsqo/s1600/Doubles%2BRap.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jskbvF76bMc/VYJCeJlLJQI/AAAAAAAAH8w/yauLhJVfsqo/s320/Doubles%2BRap.JPG" width="232" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">From <a href="http://firstgradefresh.blogspot.com/2011/10/doubles-rap-ipod-and-more.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">First Grade Fresh</a></td></tr></tbody></table></li><li>Lastly, we count to ten in Hawaiian. I use the posters from <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Number-Sense-Posters-in-English-and-Hawaiian-328500" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Surfin' Through Second</a>. I love this part of our routine because even though my school has a Hawaiian Immersion program, the regular classes don't get much Hawaiian instruction, it's up to the individual teacher. This helps me (non-Hawaiian haole lady) connect the language to math. </li></ol>This routine takes 10-15 minutes and the kids are seriously sad if we skip it! They love knowing what comes next and the calendar helper LOVES being the leader for the day!<br /><br />You can see a few of the activities incorporate place value practice. That's how I sneak it it EVERYDAY! :)<br /><br />Another thing I do pretty much every day is math centers. I do four different centers: Math with the teacher (small group lesson), Math by Myself (Math journal work), Math with Technology (X-tra Math and then SumDog), and Math with a Buddy (math center games). <br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yKKSIEVnpSw/VYJEl3sLrNI/AAAAAAAAH88/VSBrAi8HV4Y/s1600/Math%2BCenters%2B1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yKKSIEVnpSw/VYJEl3sLrNI/AAAAAAAAH88/VSBrAi8HV4Y/s400/Math%2BCenters%2B1.png" width="340" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Click on the picture to check out these posters on <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Math-Center-Cards-Posters-1911554" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">TpT</a>! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Math-Center-Cards-Posters-1911554" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="308" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9NnJ1xbB3Os/VY37WD5__QI/AAAAAAAAH_M/uvNMYHcha2c/s400/Math%2BCenter%2BPosters.png" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Of course it's easy to differentiate and provide practice and instruction for place value in the teacher group, because I get to pick what the kids do that week. That's when I would introduce skills, such as expanded form, that are not necessarily covered in our whole group math curriculum. But it's also easy to do all that during Math with a Buddy, AKA center games. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I used this wooden stand and containers from <a href="http://www.lakeshorelearning.com/product/productDet.jsp?productItemID=1%2C689%2C949%2C371%2C925%2C362&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=1408474395181113&bmUID=1435368319198" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Lakeshore Learning</a> for my math centers. The green buckets contained activities for Operations and Algebraic Thinking standards. The blue containers had activities for Numbers in Base Ten standards. The orange buckets are for Geometry and Measurement activities. When at Math with a Buddy, students can choose which activity to do, but they must work with a partner and they must turn in the recording sheet for me to look at later. This helps tell me if they got the concept, or if we need to do more practice in the Meet with the Teacher group. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EI9VAwqKLhQ/VYJEmMCVHyI/AAAAAAAAH9A/93WL-czC4sw/s1600/Math%2BCenters%2B2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EI9VAwqKLhQ/VYJEmMCVHyI/AAAAAAAAH9A/93WL-czC4sw/s400/Math%2BCenters%2B2.png" width="345" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Get the <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Math-Tub-Labels-1925728" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">labels here on TpT</a>!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Math-Tub-Labels-1925728" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="308" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xFqRUE6dDg8/VY37aLKVCEI/AAAAAAAAH_U/vZDH0f5EXUg/s400/Math%2BTub%2BLabels.png" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">As to which activities I would put in these boxes, I would always choose skills that we were currently working on and then fill the rest of the boxes with review. I know, I'm crazy. My husband tells me everyday! My current school is 20 miles away from where we live and I have to drive on a curvy, and often dangerous 2 lane road to the other side of the island. It's usually not a problem in the mornings, but the afternoons can take me over an hour to get home because of tourist and rush hour traffic. And when it's whale season, people just stop in the middle of the road to watch spouts and breeches!<br /><br />After winter break this year, we transferred my son to our local neighborhood school from a small private school he was attending in the town where I teach. He was having a hard time adjusting to the small school and making friends in a community where we didn't live. We decided having friends in our neighborhood was more important, so we moved him. After making that decision, we learned so much more about our neighborhood school. It's only 8 years old, so the buildings are new and up to date. They have AC and properly installed technology (Hello ceiling hung projectors!). We also learned that it is the only Arts-Integrated school in all of Hawaii and is ranked a Recognition school by the Hawaii Dept of Education. That's a pretty high honor around here! I couldn't believe all this amazingness was in our backyard and we didn't even know it! I even went to two different arts trainings on Oahu with teachers from this school and fell in love with them - they are just like me! Dedicated, organized, creative, and fun!<br /><br />Now, don't get me wrong, I LOVE my current school. I have met amazing teachers and there are amazing things going on. The principal is dedicated to student success and trusts teachers abilities. It's really refreshing to work in this atmosphere after coming from a K-12 school where the elementary was put on the back-burner and focus was on upper grades (testing). But the commute is killing me. And I miss working and living in the same community. The other day, I was walking down the path of my school after the last bell and realized I didn't know or recognize one single face in the sea of parents because I don't live here and I don't shop or hang out here. There is a disconnect and I don't like it. I want to make connections with parents and know them as people, not just so-and-so's mom. So, in February, I decided I would apply for a transfer. <br /><br />My neighborhood school is a pretty sought-after school on the island for teachers, so I knew the competition would be hard. I needed to bring my "A game". The first thing I did was search for an updated resume. My current resume was tired and boring. This is an Arts-Integrated school, I need to show my creativity. So I headed to Etsy and searched for resume templates. I fell in love with the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/205418627/resume-template-with-cover-letter-for?ref=shop_home_active_5" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Roberta Nowack Resume and Cover Letter template</a> from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/Pappermint" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Pappermint </a>on Etsy.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rBWAhw3pTdI/VWDSh2cDAcI/AAAAAAAAH6M/vrnlcGSy8bk/s1600/Nicole%2BResume%2Bfor%2Bblog.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rBWAhw3pTdI/VWDSh2cDAcI/AAAAAAAAH6M/vrnlcGSy8bk/s640/Nicole%2BResume%2Bfor%2Bblog.png" width="492" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">It comes in Word, but I was easily able to transfer to PowerPoint since Word makes my eye twitch. I really love the look of this: the splash of color on the side, the icons, the pretty font for my name. It comes with fonts, too! SO easy! My old resume was 2 pages, but I condensed all the info to fit on one. I had to make some hard choices as to what I wanted to include. In the end, this is what I came up with. I blocked out some personal information, but you get the idea. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I included a cover letter with my resume and application, as well. In the cover letter, I basically told the new principal about why we moved to Maui and what we were looking for in a community. I told her that I felt her school held the same values we did. I told her about the disconnect I felt in the community I was currently teaching and why I want to live and teach in the same area. I told her about myself as a teacher: my values, beliefs, and goals. The school is arts and technology focused, so I spoke about my competencies in those areas, as well. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">As a transfer applicant in Hawaii, they were required to interview me, which I knew was the case. But I still wanted to wow them with my resume and cover letter. This helps them form an opinion of me before they meet me. To prepare for my interview, I created a portfolio to bring with. I used a clear-covered 3-prong folder and some plastic sleeves. I created a cover that matched everything, placed my cover letter and resume, 4 pages of pictures from my classroom, a copy of my teaching license, and two letters of recommendation from my previous principal on Lanai and my current Academic Coach. Here is what the cover and classroom photo pages looked like:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZPEd7BMRjQ0/VWDWyyl5njI/AAAAAAAAH6Y/2d76T56-FXE/s1600/Portfolio%2Bcover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZPEd7BMRjQ0/VWDWyyl5njI/AAAAAAAAH6Y/2d76T56-FXE/s400/Portfolio%2Bcover.jpg" width="308" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aFD63YWiLgI/VWDW1T0kBAI/AAAAAAAAH6g/sFK72k-dwv4/s1600/Portfolio%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aFD63YWiLgI/VWDW1T0kBAI/AAAAAAAAH6g/sFK72k-dwv4/s400/Portfolio%2B1.jpg" width="308" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--4KvhpNYpw4/VWDW1rW37zI/AAAAAAAAH6k/MEAvMN1TVZo/s1600/Portfolio%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--4KvhpNYpw4/VWDW1rW37zI/AAAAAAAAH6k/MEAvMN1TVZo/s400/Portfolio%2B2.jpg" width="308" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qTpgmzoHEhw/VWDW1pO4AiI/AAAAAAAAH6o/dwwhIab7cVI/s1600/Portfolio%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qTpgmzoHEhw/VWDW1pO4AiI/AAAAAAAAH6o/dwwhIab7cVI/s400/Portfolio%2B3.jpg" width="308" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-17qPN8fqlBA/VWDW2NqVS8I/AAAAAAAAH6w/QwvRobfFyW4/s1600/Portfolio%2B4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-17qPN8fqlBA/VWDW2NqVS8I/AAAAAAAAH6w/QwvRobfFyW4/s400/Portfolio%2B4.jpg" width="308" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">You can see I designed all the pages to match. I knew they used the Daily 5 and CAFE, which I love! So I made sure to showcase those aspects. The cute arrows are from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/168110420/80-off-sale-arrows-clipart-commercial?ref=shop_home_active_2&ga_search_query=arrows" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Pretty Grafik Design</a> on Etsy. At the end of my interview when they asked if I had questions, that's when I showed them my porfolio. I then left it with the principal as I left. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Later that day, I was thrilled to receive a call that they chose me for a 5th grade position! It will be a big stretch for me, moving from 1st to 5th, but I'm up for the challenge! My commute will go from 21 miles to 1. And my kids and I will all be at the same school, since my youngest will be starting kindergarten. I couldn't be happier! I think it will help us get to know more of our neighbors with kids and help us feel more settled in our new home and community. I can't wait. Until then, I'll be packing boxes and crying about leaving my new friends at my current school. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">"Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end." Ain't that the truth, Semisonic? </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Are you switching grades, transferring, or applying for new teaching jobs this year? What better way to get started than to get your actual planner ready!<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-O3OKw5Zbx30/VT5dijOkgTI/AAAAAAAAH38/uFrNfxMymwI/s1600/Teacher%2BPlanner%2B1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-O3OKw5Zbx30/VT5dijOkgTI/AAAAAAAAH38/uFrNfxMymwI/s1600/Teacher%2BPlanner%2B1.png" height="400" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>I have used planners from <a href="http://www.amodernteacher.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">A Modern Teacher</a> for 2 years now and I won't go back to the cheap-o store bought ones. Customization is the way to go!<br /><br />My first year using April's planners, I got the <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Teacher-Binder-Planner-Organizer-Common-Core-Editable-Chevron-1233932" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">chevron planner</a>. I had the <a href="http://www.schoolgirlstyle.com/2013/10/rainbow-chalkboard/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Rainbow Chalkboard</a> classroom theme from Schoolgirl Style. I loved the colors and all the editable organization.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Teacher-Binder-Planner-Organizer-Common-Core-Editable-Chevron-1233932" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-grWHUa1RKOA/VT3hQ_lv1sI/AAAAAAAAH3Q/lTGuG0JAqr4/s1600/chevron.jpg" height="320" width="248" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This year I used the <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Teacher-Binder-Planner-Organizer-Common-Core-Editable-Happy-Day-1234646" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Happy Day</a> planner. I switched up my theme this year and went for the Eric Carle-esque <a href="http://www.schoolgirlstyle.com/2014/05/bug-classroom-theme/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Bugs</a> theme, but I still loved the rainbow and happy colors of Happy Day. It's so me! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Teacher-Binder-Planner-Organizer-Common-Core-Editable-Happy-Day-1234646" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cOvWo1XQPVw/VT3ioY01iDI/AAAAAAAAH3c/RFWvAQv-QQ8/s1600/Happy%2BDay.jpg" height="320" width="248" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>I have a big surprise (that I've already shared on my FB page!) - I'm moving to 5th grade next year! And I'm moving to our neighborhood school where my kids go. I'm so excited for a shorter commute and for the kids and I to be together. But that's all a different blog post! :)<br /><br />My new school is an arts-integrated school so I was thinking about what theme I could use that would still be bright and fun, a little more grown up, and also artistic. I found these folders at the Target Dollar Spot (woot woot! Maui has a Target now!) and I loved the colors and watercolor technique. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XkHBdrp4JQ4/VT5dqbnzk-I/AAAAAAAAH4E/Shzajd7-Rvw/s1600/Folders.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XkHBdrp4JQ4/VT5dqbnzk-I/AAAAAAAAH4E/Shzajd7-Rvw/s1600/Folders.png" height="300" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">So imagine my giddy delight when Melanie came out with a watercolor classroom theme and April came out with a matching teacher planner! Next year I plan to use the new <a href="http://www.schoolgirlstyle.com/2015/04/flamingo/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Flamingo Watercolor </a>theme. While I pack my classroom and get ready to move this summer, I can't really do much in terms of room decor yet. But I <i>can</i> start getting my planner ready! </div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ElHnG0XPOd0/VT5dx1eXJYI/AAAAAAAAH4M/RQcIABAoTlY/s1600/Teacher%2BPlanner%2B10.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ElHnG0XPOd0/VT5dx1eXJYI/AAAAAAAAH4M/RQcIABAoTlY/s1600/Teacher%2BPlanner%2B10.png" height="400" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I decided to print out the pages that I know for sure I will want. I put them in page protectors for now and hope to get them coil bound at OfficeMax closer to the start of the year. But, I may just keep them in the protectors and write with Vis-a-vis markers on them. We'll see! </div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0BqhlymL2fs/VT5d5G8OmWI/AAAAAAAAH4U/3VnWmmGF2MA/s1600/Teacher%2BPlanner%2B2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0BqhlymL2fs/VT5d5G8OmWI/AAAAAAAAH4U/3VnWmmGF2MA/s1600/Teacher%2BPlanner%2B2.png" height="400" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Hawaii's new evaluation system has a section where teachers need to provide evidence of professional development. The sheet on the left with come in super handy while filling that all out. And I loved the sheet on the right for keeping track of classroom purchases for tax purposes. And as documentation for me to know when enough is enough! </div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gUiU3Bk4nlA/VT5eBuO7zhI/AAAAAAAAH4c/Sc-Q1BL9wCI/s1600/Teacher%2BPlanner%2B3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gUiU3Bk4nlA/VT5eBuO7zhI/AAAAAAAAH4c/Sc-Q1BL9wCI/s1600/Teacher%2BPlanner%2B3.png" height="400" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I keep my gradebook pages on a clipboard so they are easy to cart around with me. At the end of the quarter, I staple them together and file them for safe keeping. I do need to turn in my gradebook at the end of the year, so I'll hole punch the sheets and put them in a 3-pronged folder. Super simple. </div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kW9yre0PWK0/VT5eJHKMnVI/AAAAAAAAH4k/03UyjBZzABw/s1600/Teacher%2BPlanner%2B4.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kW9yre0PWK0/VT5eJHKMnVI/AAAAAAAAH4k/03UyjBZzABw/s1600/Teacher%2BPlanner%2B4.png" height="400" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">And of course, I needed 5th grade standards! Which reminds me, I gotta go study these! Ahhh! </div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-T5fbZfIzP6k/VT5eQaHjV2I/AAAAAAAAH4s/pDI4ZPciDvY/s1600/Teacher%2BPlanner%2B5.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-T5fbZfIzP6k/VT5eQaHjV2I/AAAAAAAAH4s/pDI4ZPciDvY/s1600/Teacher%2BPlanner%2B5.png" height="400" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I loved this sheet about internet usernames and passwords for the teacher and for the students. I have so many programs that I need to keep login info for: email, attendance system, subfinder, our DOE intranet, etc. I also love this sheet for the kids. I keep the student passwords on my computer and made cards for the kids. But they lose those cards, then I have to look it up on my computer. This sheet will make it easy to look up in a flash. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dt97HvMavyE/VT5eXNRO_nI/AAAAAAAAH40/Vk_MoDgDSvo/s1600/Teacher%2BPlanner%2B8.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dt97HvMavyE/VT5eXNRO_nI/AAAAAAAAH40/Vk_MoDgDSvo/s1600/Teacher%2BPlanner%2B8.png" height="400" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I'm also loving this post-it note landing spot. How many times have you written a post-it note full of important information, just to misplace it? It's happened to me more times than I can count! Now they have a spot.
